The Journal Quilts project was initiated by Karey Bresenham, organizer of the International Quilt Festival through the Quiltart list. Each month, for the nine months preceding the Houston Quilt Festival, the participating artists were to make an 8-1/2 X 11" quilt as a visual component of the journal they were keeping. The artists were encouraged to experiment and use the small format to try new techniques and push themselves in new directions. The quilts were exhibited in October/November 2002 at the Houston Festival and drew thousands of viewers who were in awe of the impact and emotions evoked by such small works being displayed together in such a big way.
There were informal awards for the quilts that showed the best use of color, experimentation, continuity of theme, best reflection of the written journal and the overall favorite. Voting was limited to the journal quilt participants in attandance. Since my quilts received the designation of best reflecting the written journal, I have included my monthly journal entries alongside the full view of the quilt (click on the quilt to see the larger view and journal entries.
