June June 2003

~ It is fitting that this is the month of June because I am working on my I REMEMBER MAMA quilt using the image of my mother, June Jackson. This small Journal quilt is a little trial run to see how it will look - and I really like it. I also learned a new technique after a visit with Sandy Sapienza. She had taken a workshop with Jan Beaney and showed me some wonderful "fabric" she had made using painted wonder-under, with snippets of cloth fused on top. It had such a rich look, I ran home and tried it. This complex cloth will be a part of my "mama" quilt. I want to convey the idea of age and the patinas that can result. My mama was a beautiful young woman and at 78 is still beautiful to me. The problem is, she doesn't think she is. I hope by honoring her beauty in this quilt that she will come to see that her beauty radiates outward from the soul, not only her face...the smile and laugh lines, the crinkles around the eyes from her lifetime of smiles. There are so many ways to be beautiful and the patinas that come with age only add richness and depth.
